Peru Beaches
Vamos a la Playa!
2400 km of coastline = Heaven
for sea lovers, surfers, and sun worshipers.
Getting Around
Getting to the beaches is the hardest part.
What's the best way? Click
here and we'll make sense of the different options.
Beach
Rules and Tips
Drinking
alcohol is allowed
(Legal drinking age is 18) Fill a cooler with beer bottles
and head for the beach. What a concept! Yet
nearly extinct in the USA. For this reason alone a trip is justified!
Camping is
allowed, bring your own tent
Safety:
Learn the "lay of the land" first. Anything
you can't afford to lose,
don't take. Locate nearby emergency services in case they are
needed.
Surfers can provide good spots as many have
camped the entire coast.
Dress
is very casual
Swimsuits and shorts rule the day, at times you'll even see someone
wear a t-shirt! In the larger cities,
dress appropriate to the norms.
Be
smart
about the sun
It's strong!
Much stronger than in Northern Europe or the U.S. Take
sunscreen, work
on you base tan and get exposure gradually. The close proximity to the
equator means pale white skin will be bright red in minutes if not
careful.
I learned this lesson the hard way on a 4-day trip
to Zorritos (Tumbes). The first hour
of the first day on the beach fried me so bad that my skin was peeling
for 2 weeks. The rest of my trip I spent indoors.
Road Trips
Tour
the NORTH
COAST, from Lima to Ecuador! Or
Tour
the SOUTH COAST, from Lima to Chile! Or, if you choose,
Tour the BEACHES around LIMA! It's all good...

Traveling the coast by bus?
You'll want to read
my thoughts on bus safety
and comfort to make the journey as pleasant
as possible.
Which of the Peru beaches is more your style?
If you like parties, discos and hanging with
the "in-crowd", Asia del Mar or Mancora is calling. What about a
place for families? Punta Sal and Paracas are perfect. Need a
quaint
beach town where you could live year-round? Try Huanchaco. In search of
the perfect wave? Go surf just south of Lima in Punta Hermosa or head
to Chicama. Big-game fishing more your thing? Cabo Blanco
sets world
records. These are just a few options, we'll explore many more.
